John Insley Coddington collection on Walter Charlton Hartridge, 1939-1972.

This collection consists primarily of letters from Walter C. Hartridge of Savannah to John I. Coddington of Washington and Bordentown, New Jersey. A few copies of Coddington's replies are included. The letters concern their mutual interest in genealogy: questions and answers pertaining to various families. Among the families they were interested in are Fatio, Gaudry, Walton, O'Driscoll, Huard, and Brewt. Other letters in the collection written to Coddington are Martha Bullard Richmond to Miss Akin, July 3, 1956, re Hartridge's impending marriage; Susan Hartridge (Mrs. Walter C.) Oct. 20, 1964, enclosing a snapshot of W.C. Hartridge III; Robert Gignilliat Kenan, Feb. 13, 1966; Nell McIntire Eller, Mar. 23, 1948; Edith D. Johnston, April 14, 1941, re her book The Houstouns of Georgia; Gertrude N. L'Engle, Sept. 3, 1952. There are several snapshots of W.C. Hartridge III in the collection, as well as clippings and printed materials.

John Insley Coddington (1902-1991) was a professor at Harvard College. After he left the school, he worked for many years in the State Department in Washington. He was a Fellow in the National Genealogical Society and served as the society's president and was editor of its National Genealogical Society Quarterly.
